Our friends from Nakusp, Gary and Marie and Paul and Lou,
were also staying down in the sensible warmth of the Rio Grande. They were
though, from my perspective insensibly [unsensibly] staying adjacent to a golf
course. Now from the perspective of a golfer this was indeed sensible.
My perspective sees
golf as a good walk wasted although I do acknowledge that sometimes Golf
courses do harbour some good species.
We visited them and this indeed was the case.
Good numbers of the gaily coloured Black-bellied Whistling Ducks
surrounded a small water hazard that also hosted the Least Grebe. Walking to
the ducks there was a good flock of attractive Lark Sparrows and the call of a
Tropical Kingbird.
A mammal lifer was seen too; Black-tailed Jack Rabbit. These
animals were amazing. One sprinted from who-knows-where to gallop wildly zig zagging
to apparently a random place where it suddenly became invisible by pressing
itself flat against the golf course’s green. Now I saw where the critter went
so I paced casually towards it, hoping to get a better view and perhaps a picky
or two. On the way I flushed another four who were secreted in similar fashion
invisibly between me and the first hare. Amazing!
Now apart from the critters this visit was catered and we enjoyed
a bbq with all the fixin’s in the cavernous area of Paula and Lou’s RV.
It was a great night with good friends and it was quietly
sad when we drove out knowing this was the end of our Canadian trip……….
