Winnie and the Upper Texas Coast

Leaving Huntsville we trailed south and east to avoid the city of houston and wound up in a little town of Winnie. Here was the gateway to a few classic spring birding destinations of Texas - specifically High Island and Anahuac National wildlife Reserve. The former is an elevated and well vegetated part of the Texan coast, acting as an island from the surrounding wetlands, and it is here that many of the migrants would make their first landfall come spring.

Anahuac is a huge wetland reserve and as we entered the sun was smiling however the wind was blowing from the north and with it the temperature headed south.
