Banff and Lake Louise

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day they say and this is an attitude helpfully recognized by the people of the Ramada in Canmore. Usually breakfast in Motels is like cereal, toast and ‘bugger off’. Now at the Ramada I won’t say the brekkie is first class but you do get, if you like, eggs, done passionately in one way – scrambled, plus sausage. Cereals, juices, bagels, waffles, mini croissants etc.

Snow-shoe Hare
So after waddling from the Ramada we squeezed into our jeep and drove west back to Lake Louise where, on this visit we could enjoy its turquoise waters. The last time we visited in early April winter was yet to leave and the lake was fully iced and snow covered, allowing us to walk towards its middle and the younger among us to engage in Ice Angelling.

We strolled around the edges of the Lake and enjoyed good views of a silently nibbling Snow-shoe Hare, active Golden mantled Ground Squirrels and the odd Pica, running the rocks no doubt collecting vegetation energetically for the coming winter. The scenery was serene and surreal.

Lake Louise
Next we drove to the nearby Lake Moraine which, if anything was more crowded yet more spectacular. Here without table or chair we picnicked at the Lake’s edge. Megan, after a while, excused herself to attend the washroom  [dunny]. She was gone a while – to the point I had begun to pack up and start the search – when she had appeared looking a little pale. Apparently she had, to the surprise of dining onlookers, suddenly fainted. Cause? No idea, but it thankfully hasn’t happened since. She did score a free drink out of it though provided by concerned staff at the nearby resort. So bonus!

Slowly drove back to Banff and Canmore on the quieter route 1A and for our trouble we were rewarded with good views of Black Bear and more Elk.

We had a typically Canadian soundtrack while driving; stories from the Vinyl Café, written and read by Stuart McLean. Amusing and touching stories, first introduced to us by Canadian veterans, Russell and Katherine McDonald. [Thanks again guys.]
